Another Argument for Gas Stoves

Man!

I have this routine for boiling eggs that works like a charm when I'm home in Cali, but feck if I can get the shell off in under a minute out here. I think it's the electric range, but maybe it's the quality of the eggs or the humidity or summat. Dunno, but it's not a great way to start the day. I hate crunching into an eggshell. Ack.

On another note, I accidentally made a hair man in the shower this morning.

Can you see him? It's better blowed up.  But most thangs is right?

Obviously my brain is on to other things.

Hey Chicago!

Here's what I know of my schedule in the coming weeks:

Brian and I drive to Chicago on Thursday, August 15th and we'll go see Tony in FALLOW that evening.

I'll likely be Northside Friday night . . . still a little up in the air at the moment . . . Saturday is unknown, but I am going to a Coffin Banger event on Sunday afternoon at the Orbit Room.  It's a Single's Mixer! Yeah.

Monday, August 19th through Thursday, August 22nd I'm having time with Mom and fam in the Northwest 'Burbs and then I'll spend Friday evening with Master Mauloff. I may be back for a minute Thursday night (22) but that has yet to be determined.

Saturday, August 24th is all about Dr. Funkywheels and his Birthday Crazyosity. I hope to see many of you there.

I will stay primarily in Old Iriving Park at the G House (Irving Park Blue Line) and I fly home the evening of Thursday, August 29th.

That means I've got lots of time available to see folks in Chi. Make your dibs. I'm available to Hang Out, to Stay Over, to do stuff, to eat.

I want lots of pizza and Mexican, maybe Cross-Rhodes (yum!). I wanna check out some of my old stomping grounds and I want to see all of you. I would fully expect a Hidden Cove night to happen.

Let me know if you have a preference of days, times, what-have-you . . .

I will also give you access to my summer calendar if you ask nicely. Feel free to add to it, but let me know you did. I'll be looking at it a bit less frequently as the summer goes on.

I'm (mostly) on vacation now! : D

Yay me!

Best,

M

Catch-Up

Strap yourselves in folks, there's lots of ground to cover. (Well we'll see how long this holds my interest. At the moment that length of time is fairly questionable.)

You can probably guess that as I'm starting this blog post after 4pm that last night's closing activities were a smashing success (to our livers and circadian cycles if nothing else)!

Sunday was a beautiful day and we broke 50 spectators for a solid and heartfelt final run of the TEMPEST. (I'm happy to say a couple people even caught the internet stream. Yes!) It's always bittersweet to let go of a production, and letting go of an entire season can be even more emotional, but I have to say the timing was right and we did a helluva lot of good work this summer. And it ended timely and well.

I'm proud to have been involved in this unique and ultimately fairly successful experiment.

I could write a lot about each experience and what I take away from each show, but I'll spare you that. Let's just say it was time well spent and all of you who had a hand in it will not be forgotten.

And, remember, Hang Outs don't expire, so look to claim yours when you can! : D

After the show we struck in fairly short order and, if one disregards the pile of human excrement just behind the studio dock door, without a hitch. I did rip the crotch out of my suit pants when moving the sound equipment. Perhaps dressing up for strike was not the brightest idea I've ever had. Tee hee.

Tristan and I bought some ice and, after a quick trailer pit stop, headed right to his house to set up for the BBQ. We iced the boat and much beer was placed therein. Beauty.

Tristan also decorated the house with various puppets in addition to this more permanent piece he has on his living room wall. I'm glad to know the good doctor and friends have a real home now that is not so hellish. Note the upward tilt of his gaze. Nice touch.

Mathys of course found a puppet to try out (Oakenshield in this case) and I found a new face. Like it?

Some of the puppets got a bit too hammered and showed us their puppet holes. Nice, real nice.

Of course, none of the puppeteers were inebriated at all! *lays finger aside of nose*

And that's why, after a great BBQ (only missing AQ, AH, KA and VS from the Summer Series) with some other Zoot folks in attendance we moved the party to MJs. I *did* have a free admission burning a hole in my wallet. It might really have succeeded as there did seem to be a hole in it last night. Yikes.

A lot of singing was accomplished. Heather had some great back up dancers.

Though we couldn't get Michael back up onstage, I did get to do a song with Tristan (Yes they had Zappa!) and McKnight (Thunderball) . I also sang with JJ (Summer Lovin') and Darren (Scenes from an Italian Restaurant) and the whole Zoot crew got down to Don't Stop Believin'.

And, to top it all off, I sang War Pigs at a gay bar. I started with that actually. I'm not sure why that pleased me so much, but it did.

My rendition of Drive at the end of the night left something to be desired, but I got tipped for Creep, one of my K-Rock standards.

Thanks to everyone for making that time. I didn't specifically say goodbye to everyone, but I think we had a good last hurrah for this summer together and I really appreciated that.

And speaking of thank yous, after watching the TED Talks Life Hack Series a few weeks ago (3 to be exact) I took some advice and wrote down three things for which I was thankful for the last 21 days. Here's the list, 'cause I have no secrets and no shame.

Did these three gratitudes a day offset a negative thought every day? I don't know, but it's nice to remember to say thank you. Don't think I'll pursue this practice anymore, but it's good to remember how one is fortunate. I've had quite a course on that this summer.

Speaking of giving thanks, the "Good Folks Who Attended the Bard in the Yard!" and sponsored this week are in no particular order:

Laura Johnson, Geri Ellen and Ken "Longbeach" Huntington, Ted and Christy Kane, Rachel Davis, Chris and Lisa Holmes, Julie Puryear and Eirk Innes, Esther Chan and Mike.

You guys are the tits, as they say.

Okay, I'm done for the day. Thanks for reading this far if ya did.

Now I'm gonna turn my brains off.

bzzzzzz kacHUNK ssssssssss *sizzle* ~steam~

All thy vexations Were but my trials of thy love, and thou Hast strangely stood the test . . .

Wow.

Not only was yesterday's performance the penultimate show of Zoot's TEMPEST, but also nearly the end of the Summer Series. Hard to believe. Happy it was a great show with an incredibly responsive crowd.

Looking forward to wrapping it all up today. Thanks again to everyone who helped make this possible for me. I surely do appreciate it.

: D

I spent a lazy afternoon before meeting Tristan at the Studio where there are always wonders to behold.

We may be rapidly approaching the end of the Summer but Tristan and crew are already working on Zoot's upcoming touring production of ALICE IN WONDERLAND. The above is the skeleton of the Mushroom. Hope to see it finished. And I hope some of you get to see it and the rest of the season.

You can find out more about Zoot's continuing work at the website. I hope you do!

I also caught Tristan blowing the ashy dust off his grill top for tomorrow's wrap-up BBQ. He and I moved a couple of things at his new place and bought some provisions. Now we just need some folks to remember ice!

Following my time with T. Cupp we rocked show and I got to spend some more quality time with Brian watching short films and friends' work before meeting up with his old pal Betsie. We took a few moments out at Brixx on 1st and Sears and chatted about many things before I headed back to the trailer and had the holy Hell scared out of me by an alarm I wasn't expecting. Phew.

All is well.

Now I'm gonna get all gussied up, 'cause I feel like it. So there.

Best,

I will stand to and feed

Friday consisted of errands with my pops.

Here's an obligatory picture of the lunch we procured from Kroger's.  Heh.

Late in the afternoon we attended a screening of Red 2 and then we dashed to Dewey's for a pizza (carryout) after I realized I had convinced myself I had a much later call than I did. Thanks to Dayton traffic lights I was 5 minutes late or I might've squeaked in.

I wasn't really feeling the show last night and I got a ride home and then got anti-social. Getting sucked into the interwebs kept me up a bit longer than I had intended, but new friends'll do that to ya.

Also getting ready to shove off . . . 3 months in. Wow.

Perhaps today will be more interesting for you my dear readers. Time will tell . . .

RainChain

Yesterday was a good day. There was weather. Lots and lots of weather. Thunder. Rain.

So much so that we were all certain the show would be cancelled. And rain it did.

This was before the show. Notice how well the rain photographed. Rare. Awesome.

The hanging gutters, or Rain Chains, in the Cloister looked particularly neat and you can see how much was coming down as the top couldn't handle the load of water running through it.

Truly beautiful though.

One more for good measure.

The good news is we somehow got lucky enough (again) that the rain stopped in time for us to do the whole show. And it was a fun sort've a manic run as we all hadn't been expecting to do it. Great crowd. New discoveries. Wet ground.

What more could you ask for in an outdoor theatre?  : D

Well hopefully that we'll get through the rest of the weekend without incident . . .

Michael and Sara came up from Cincy to see the show so I was particularly happy we didn't get rained out. They're off to Vegas for the weekend and they wouldn't have been able to catch it again, but they did and they were some of those rare folks who saw all three shows this summer.

Thank you!

Brian and I went to Milano's with them, had a bite and we talked for a long time. I'm glad I've seen so much of those friends this summer. It's been a gift.

Now the sun is actually coming out of this morning's latest deluge and I'm feeling grateful to see it. That's the beauty of weather in the end. The passage of time. The thankfulness for something new that I don't always get when the desert sun is incessantly beating down on me.

A good storm is a generator of grace.

Now I'm ready to see what today will bring. I hope you are as well.

Best,

M

Blob's

Afternoon.

Yep.  I'm a little slow on the draw today, but I am enjoying the thunder immensely. Back in the trailer after a wonderful yesterday.

Had a good show where I've reached the heights of sloth; it is after all the mother of invention and I endeavored to see just how much I could pile on the sound cart before setting stage right yesterday. Right? Hmm. Not sure how to qualify it. The not SM side of the stage. Whatever.

See my picture?

So so lazy. But I was yacht rocking it in my Boatswaine hat. Don't get jealous. I'll go to your party. Sheesh.

After strike, I headed to the Westside and had a few moments with the Nealeighs before heading to Blind Bob's (or Blob's as the locals call it) and I met fist with Tristan, then Juliet dropped by, then Mr. Heater, then McKnight, then Alan, then Tuesday and Minks, then Risa.  A lot of great folks, but the biggest surprise of the night was the arrival of the one and only Tim Judge!

He looks great don't he?

Tim was the TD for WSU's Theatre Department when I was at school and he still is. He's one of those backbone staffers that really keeps things rolling the way they need to be. He does great work, he cares about the students and he's just a really punny, nice guy. My kind of guy. It was awesome to get to catch up with him.

He said he'd drop by for an hour and stayed for three, so I think we all had a good visit.

Great to see you Tim!

Most of the group filtered out at different times, but I had not realized Wednesday was the K-Rock night. The song choices sucked but I closed the place down and had a few late night adventures with some folks I met through Tuesday/Minks. It also turns out Minks used to work the door at Canal Street and has a copy of 13 Drinking Songs. Who knew?

Nice to see so many of you and to meet the new ones. Especially you Anthony with that *ahem* astonishing rendition of MY WAY we attempted. Yikes.

Needles to sew, it was a good evening and I just had my afternoon appointment cancel so I'm gonna listen to the thunder for a bit and enjoy the stillness.

4 more days of TEMPEST . . .

Best,
